This year I started painting on watercolor paper. Exploring animals and dancers has taken a new turn. Images look so different with pure white surrounding. Simplicity. Humor. Color. Read below if you want to think more about white space.
White Space
The practice of using white space is new to me. I remember an artist friend commenting that it didn’t appear that I used any white in my work. “Huh”, I thought. It didn’t seem like an exciting color, plus, my mother loved white. So, being a rebellious type, I didn’t pay attention to white. That was about 15 years ago. But, the comment stuck with me. Years later my oldest son studied Graphic Design and would share his excitement about Typography and White Space. Eventually, the idea and reality of white space took hold and I’ve let it into my work. I am happy I did as the images live on the paper in a different way surrounded by white. Lighter, more focused on the subject, simpler, with more oxygen.
